Nebraska Department of Roads Says No to Speed Limit Reduction

The Administration and Staff at Jennie Melham Medical Center sent a letter to the Custer County Board of Supervisors suggesting that they request a speed limit reduction on West Highway 2 in Broken Bow. The hope was to make a safer environment for local citizens and travelers when driving through Broken Bow. Vick Larson from the Nebraska Department of Roads attended the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday and explained that there are many factors included in determining speed limits, including traffic flow, the grade of the road, and number of intersections. Larson said speed studies were done in 1987, 1995, 2008 and earlier in 2011 and no changes were warranted. Larson went on to say that the Nebraska Department of Roads would not reduce the speed limit at this time. The concerns of the citizens and officials in Broken Bow include the fact that once the businesses are running at full capacity it may be too late to avoid big problems on the west side of Broken Bow.
