Lady Knights take down Mullen in Sandhills Conference Semifinals
NORTH PLATTE - The Sandhills Conference Tournament continued on Thursday with a much anticipated re-match of LVC foes.
Sandhills/Thedford (14-2) and Mullen (13-5) gave fans a preview of what may come next week in the LVC Tournament. Both team have a good chance of meeting in next week’s LVC championship game. In their first meeting this season, Sandhills/Thedford needed overtime to take down the previously unbeaten Mullen Lady Broncos 50-45. Thursday’s game was another tight game throughout as the Lady Knights survived for a 36-32 win. Mullen led 9-8 after one quarter, but Sandhills/Thedford fought back and re-gained the lead by halftime at 20-19. The Lady Knights outscored Mullen 9-7 in the third to make it 29-26 and set up another close finish. Taylor Marten received an assist from Sarah Miles to begin the fourth quarter, but Mullen’s Jessica Lovitt scored off an inbounds pass to cut the lead 31-28.
Mullen pulled to within two at 33-31 as Clara Vinton hit one-of-two free-throws and Rachel Hoesing got the putback off the missed second shot for two.
As the quarter drew to a close, both teams traded a free-throw before Michaela Miles connected on two foul shots to seal the game with 19 seconds remaining.
Taylor Marten led the Lady Knights with 12 points while Shelby Saner added 11. They advance to play Brady (15-1). Brady’s only loss came to undefeated Hitchcock County early this season.
