Sargent Welcomed BRAN Riders Wednesday June 6th
The 32nd Annual Bike Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) started Sunday, June 3rd in Minatare. Wednesday night just over 600 bike riders and approximately 200 of their supporters were welcomed to Sargent.
Tim Obermier and his son William, from Aurora are riding their 2nd BRAN, Tim said he really appreciated riding in to Sargent and being handed a cold bottle of water.
Holly Foster of Lincoln is a first time rider and said her neighbor talked her in to riding.
John Kilpatrick of Omaha is on his first ride as well and said the Fellowship is one of the best things about BRAN.
Maybelle and Wes Galusha and their son Shawn and Wes' father are all riding again this year. Maybelle said the hospitality in the communities is amazing.
Jim Wilcockson of Omaha was impressed that the community of Sargent has people in golf carts and 4 wheelers giving rides to the bikers.
Wes said the group spends an estimated $20,000 in each town. Wes also told me that the route is determined by a committee each year.
Pete Lieben said that people living in Omaha don't know what the state has to offer and that one of his favorite part of the state is the Sandhills.
Ken Ward of Grand Island and his son Caleb are also part of the group this year. Caleb said the host towns have been very hospitable. He also commented on their stay in Arthur and that their group increased Arthur’s population 8 times while they were there.
BRAN awards $27,000 in scholarships each year, including one to a senior in the town voted "Best Host Community" by the riders. Callaway took the honors last year. Ages of the riders this year range from 8 to 88, 6% are minors, 28% are 19-49 and 56% are 50 plus. You will find additional information at www.bran-inc.org.
