Broken Bow Receives Community of the Year Honors from Nebraska Diplomats
The Nebraska Diplomats is the largest economic development organization in Nebraska and they held their annual banquet Friday night. The diplomats honor individuals and businesses every year. This year Broken Bow shared the honor of Communities of the Year with Wisner. In the press release Broken Bow is described as a thriving regional center with a population of 3,500 people and a 60 percent workforce that travels to the city from throughout the region. Approximately 12 years ago, city and business leaders came together to talk about ways in which to stem the outflow of businesses. In 2003, the privately funded Custer Economic Development Corporation was formed to lead the charge. Since that time, the new Custer Campus of Mid-Plains Community College has been built, the hospital renovated and 16 new businesses opened during 2011. Broken Bow Mayor Cecil Burt accepted the award from Governor Heineman and Burt told KCNI KBBN that the bulk of the credit goes to the Community and the Custer Economic Development Corporation.
