Cozad, Gothenburg Split Doubleheader
Cozad opened up on a 14-2 run and kept Gothenburg in the rearview mirror most of the night as the Haymakers downed the Swedes 58-41 Thursday evening.
Nate Bubak scored all eight of his points during the opening scoring run, helping lift the Haymakers to a 28-19 halftime lead. Cozad’s defense took Gothenburg out of rhythm forcing a number of turnovers. The Haymakers didn’t make it any easier in the second half as they found success shooting from beyond the arc. The Haymakers outscored the Swedes 16-8 in the third quarter and the Swedes could not catch up.
Tylar Lauby led Cozad with 10 points. Jacob Rush had nine. Lauby and Rush combined for three of Cozad’s five three-pointers. The other two came from Bubak. Colin Wetovick and Conor Young also finished with eight points each.
Tanner Borchardt led Gothenburg with 15 points while Logan Koehler and Blake Ristine each added eight.
Cozad improves to 7-3 with the win. Gothenburg drops to 4-9.
In the girls’ contest Gothenburg won a back-and-forth battle over Cozad 44-38.
Cozad led most of the first half, holding leads of 11-9 at the end of the first quarter and 23-18 at the break. Kaylea Reyes scored 12 of her 19 points in the first half to lead the Haymakers.
The Lady Swedes owned the third quarter and used an 8-0 run between the third and fourth quarters to assert themselves. Gothenburg held Cozad to just four points in the third quarter and finished with the final six points in the third.
Brittyn Munster led the Swedes with 12 points. Aryn Meisinger added 10 points while Regan Geiken and Jacey Wiggins both finished with eight.
The Lady Swedes are now 6-8. Cozad drops to 3-8 with the loss.
Gothenburg will host Chase County Friday night while Cozad travels to Ainsworth on Saturday.
