Spirit Drop Wild Game to Cedar Valley

In a rollercoaster ride of a game Monday evening, the Broken Bow Spirit softball team lost 12-10 to Cedar Valley. The Spirit led 5-2 heading into the fifth, but Cedar Valley came out swinging and put up 10 runs in the top of the fifth, aided in part by some fielding errors by the Spirit.

Broken Bow would rally back scoring two in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 12-7 deficit. The girls kept their chins up and played strong after shortstop Kassie Russell was carried off the field to the ER. Russell suffered an ankle injury after sliding in for a score followed by Tressa Ripp on her heels. The girls drove in two more runs and held Cedar Valley in the top of the seventh. However the Spirit could only manage one more run in the bottom of the seventh, and Cedar Valley hung on for the victory.

Tressa Ripp scored four runs, with one RBI, and a triple. Kassie Russell and Lizzy Griffith each scored two runs. Sami Gaston had one RBI and Hanna Lane had three RBIs and each scored a run. Pitcher Hannah Evans also went 4-for-4 with a double. Every batter had at least two hits, and catcher Morgan Hueftle hit 5-for-5.

Spirit coach Tara Russell was pleased with the performance of the girls. Russell said there were some great catches in the outfield, some great steals, some awesome bunts and they also turned a double play on defense.

The Spirit team is 6-2 in the league. They will host Loup City on Wednesday, June 27 at 8:00pm at the Tomahawk field. This will be their last home game for the league season and they invite everyone to come out and support them. Their League tournament will be July 6, 7 & 8, in Ord. They will then compete at the Class C State Tournament July 20-22 in Lexington.

Kassie Russell was taken to the ER, her X-rays came out clean. She has a bad sprain with some ligament strain. She will be out for about a week.
