Ice Fishing Safety Tips

As Central Nebraskans know, the weather in this part of the state can be inconsistent, and with warmer temperatures in the forecast, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is passing along some safety reminders.

If you plan on ice fishing this season, there are basic safety measures that must be taken into account.

1 - The minimum thickness for supporting a person for ice fishing is 4 inches of clear, solid ice.  That number doubles if operating an ATV on the ice.

2 - Always fish with another person.

3 - Ice picks should be worn around your neck in case of a fall through the ice.

4 - Keep a long rope with you incase of the event of a rescue.

5 - Look for changes in ice color, as it could mean weak or thin ice.
